Girl in the Lens has moved!!

For anyone that’s still following Girl in the Lens at our WordPress domain on Bloglovin, RSS or email, I just wanted to shoot out a post to let you know that we’ve permanently moved to, as well as given the blog a gorgeous new look! If you go to the old WordPress domain, you’ll be redirected automatically to our new site. I realise that this doesn’t help people who only read the blog through Bloglovin, RSS or email updates, so I wanted to send out this post. Here’s the link to our new Bloglovin page if you want to stay a follower that way. On the new blog location we’ve got links for all the other following methods. I hope you guys choose to stay with us, the blog has had some really exciting collaborations with brands lately and Callum’s pictures have been getting even better 🙂 and let us know what you think of the new look!

We hope to see you over at!

Hi everyone 🙂 As you all know, Callum and I have been working on a new look for the blog, and it’s finally time to unveil it! We’ve headed over to so it’s even easier to access and has a lovely new look with all the same content. I hope you guys like it!

You’ll have to subscribe again to receive new posts from the blog – a bit of a faff but couldn’t get round it I’m afraid. You can choose from a number of following options on the right sidebar. I’d recommend following by email as we’re still working on getting the bloglovin link up at the moment, should just be a few days.

Let me know what you think of the new look!

Pinterest - Inspiration

As if we needed another social media site to waste all our hours away on, now there’s Pinterest. It’s like being a kid in a candy shop – everywhere you look there are beautiful images, and it’s so easy to just repin what you like to your own boards. On my account I’ve got three at the moment – a fashion one, a beauty one (make up and hair), a home and garden one and an inspiration one (things to live by). It’d be cool if they set up a service whereby you could get notebook covers, framed pictures and even wallpapers decorated with your pins – I’d definitely decorate one of my bedroom walls with it.

Let me know your Pinterest account if you have one so I can follow!

New Year’s Resolutions For the Blog

Just a little post to say a) HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!, b) hope you had a lovely time over Christmas, and c) I’ve come up with a couple of New Year’s resolutions for the blog! Here they are:

  • More outfit posts – I always wanted this blog to be mainly a personal style one and very photography heavy. It’s been difficult to do as many outfit posts as I’ve wanted because it’s been getting dark so early, so when I’m back from work the light has gone already. Also, Callum’s been super busy with his MSc, so he hasn’t always been free to take pictures and edit them for me. This will be a difficult resolution to keep I think as I’ll be living apart from Callum most of next year, but we’ll try our best to work around this and make sure that there’s a lot of good outfit posts on the blog.
  • New look – Not the shop, but an actual new look for the blog. We’ve been working on this for the last few weeks, so hopefully it’s going to be launched soon. I’m really trying to give the blog a more distinct identity (to go along with the increased focus on outfit posts).

That’s it, but I’d love to hear from you guys what you’d like to see more (or less) of on the blog! And thanks so much everyone for a great few months at the tail-end of 2011, and here’s to an awesome 2012 🙂

On THOSE T-shirts *Cough Topman Cough*

Topman I'm Sorry T-ShirtTop Man What Breed is She T-Shirtsource:

Just wanted to add my two cents to the debate that’s surrounding these Topman t-shirts – recently withdrawn from sale of course. I’m not really going to talk about the second one. It’s mildly funny and I don’t really take issue with it, especially when you consider how there are equally derogatory t-shirts about men in a number of high street stores. I can see how it was ‘a bit of a laugh’. But as for the first one, the ‘I’m Sorry’ tee, now that is just totally appalling.

A Topman spokesperson on Facebook apologised for the offence it has caused, claiming that ‘these T-shirts were meant to be light-hearted and carried no serious meaning’. Now, I like to think I’ve got a good sense of humour but what stops the t-shirt from being light hearted is the choice of excuses. ‘I hate you’? ‘You provoked me’? There are dark sentiments in these excuses. They hint at anger. They are scarily ambiguous. Even if this t-shirt makes no direct link to violence, it’s implicated in the words. Worn on a t-shirt, the excuses become glamorised, normalised. And let’s not even go into its implicated stance on youth drinking culture in Britain today.

I have no problem with fashion being offensive. It is, after all, an expression of the wearers personality, beliefs and opinions, and not everyone’s going to agree with what people have to say. But if you’re going to wear something controversial I’d rather you had something important to say – some message behind the fabric (or meat, a la Lady Gaga). There is no message behind this t-shirt. What’s its purpose? In fact, if there is any message behind it it’s that these sorts of excuses are ok. And no, Topman, they’re really not.

“Why Do You Spend So Much Money on Clothes?”

I get a bit peeved off when people ask me this. Firstly – I don’t! I spend some money on clothes but not a huge amount. And the clothes I wear last me years as things go in and out of fashion, as my own style shifts, as my size wobbles about from 6-10 in an incredibly annoying manner.

But I mean, so what if I do like to spend money on clothes? Why do you spend money on anything? The simple answer for me is that you spend money on things that make you happy. The way they might do that varies. A new laptop might make you happy because it’s more powerful and you can use it for more things (hello Callum and his new Macbook Pro!). A new washing machine might make you happy because it’s made your life a little bit easier.

Clothes make me happy. They can change my entire outlook one day because I’ve got that new jacket on and it’s warm and comfy, and it makes my waist look good. And another day you’re late for work in the morning because for some reason you find you hate all your clothes, but then you put together that 30th outfit and – hey presto! – it’s right. I’ve shrunk into my seat on the tube on the way to work because my frantically assembled outfit just isn’t doing it for me, and other days I’m almost swaggering from my happiness in what I’m wearing. And this is NOT just a girl thing! Callum’s male flatmate came back from work one day in a bad mood and told me it was all because he wore the ‘wrong’ thing to work.

So there you go. That’s how I justify spending money on clothes anyway. What are your thoughts on the matter?

Last week Callum, my parents and I went on a little trip to Brussels via Eurostar. It was so nice to explore a new city. Brussels is pretty cool and has a really quirky streak. I mean, we saw giant balloons of cartoon characters parading down the street and a cycling band (like the Lucozade advert but on bikes!) – weird! I look forward to going back with friends to make the most of the awesome food and drink culture out there.

While we were there, Callum also took the chance to practice his film making skills. Here’s the video he made of our trip – I think it’s bloody amazing! Hope you guys like it 🙂 Full screen it for the best effect, it’s HD and everything! We’re thinking of trying more video content for the blog, so do let me know what you think!

Ps. The song is ‘The Swallow and the Medicine’ by The Tallest Man On Earth. Be sure to check out the album it’s from, Shallow Grave.

Here Goes!

Very very excited to be starting this blog. I’ve been wanting to do one for a while now, having been so impressed by the fashion blogs already on the interwebs (see blogroll) and thinking it looks so fun. I’ve also reached a point in my life where I’ve become comfortable and assured with own style, and I’m pushing my fashion boundaries a little more. I may not be a model or have studied fashion at university (I did Geography instead!), but I am always true to my own style and use fashion to both reflect how I am feeling/influence how I’m feeling. So if that strikes a chord with you please do stick around and say hello!
